Prof. Dr. med. dent. Ronald E. Jung, PhD

Clinic Director

Ronald E. Jung is Professor and Director of the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry at the University of Zurich. He has extensive experience in prosthodontics, implant dentistry and oral surgery. In his career, he has taught and conducted research at several prestigious institutions around the world, including the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, and the University in Amsterdam, where he received his PhD.
In 2015, he was appointed Full Professor Ad Personam of Implantology at the University of Zurich and headed the Division of Implantology at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry. In 2022, he assumed the position of Clinic Director and Full Professor of the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry at University of Zurich. Ronald Jung is internationally known for his work in hard and soft tissue management as well as his research in new technologies in implant dentistry and reconstructive dentistry. He is currently president of the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO), past president of the Swiss Society for Reconstructive Dentistry (SSRD) and a member of the board of the Osteology Foundation.

Prof. Dr. med. dent. Daniel Thoma

Head of Oral Implantology

Daniel Thoma is an Adjunct Professor (Titularprofessor)  at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry, University of Zurich, Switzerland. He graduated in 2000 at the University of Basel, Switzerland and was trained in implant dentistry and prosthodontics at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Sciences, University of Zurich, Switzerland. Dr. Thoma was the recipient of an ITI scholarship and spent 1 year at the Department of Periodontics, University of Texas, Health Science Center, San Antonio, USA. Between 2008 and 2012, he was a full-time Assistant Professor at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. In 2013, he got his venia legendi (Privatdozent) at the University of Zurich and since then serves as an Associate Professor at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. His focus is on the comprehensive treatment of complex, partially edentulous patients applying all available options of reconstructive dentistry including dental implants. His main scientific interest is related to hard and soft tissue regeneration with and without the addition of biologic mediators. He has published numerous scientific and clinical articles in these fields. Dr. Thoma is a Fellow of the International Team of Implantology (ITI).

Prof. Dr. med. dent. Tim Joda, PhD

Head of eHealth in Reconstructive Dentistry

Tim Joda is an Adjunct Professor (Titularprofessor) at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry, University of Zurich, Switzerland. He graduated and received his doctorate in dentistry at the University of Münster, Germany. He is triple board-certified in Prosthodontics, Periodontology, and Implant Dentistry. Tim holds an MSc degree in Prosthodontics & Biomaterials, University of Greifswald, Germany. He received the Venia Legendi “Privatdozent” and was appointed Associate Professor at the University of Bern, Switzerland. In 2014, he was a Visiting Professor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, USA. From 2015-2018, he was the founding Director of the Division of Digital Reconstructive Technology & Implantology in Bern. In 2018, Tim Joda was appointed Vice Chair of the Department of Reconstructive Dentistry, University Center for Dental Medicine Basel, Switzerland, and served as the Program Director of Postgraduate Education and Head of the Division of Dental Technology & Digital Dental Solutions. Tim Joda earned his Ph.D. in “Digital Implant Workflows” at the University of Siena, Italy. He also received an executive MBA from the University of Zurich. Tim Joda is actively involved in clinical and translational research on implant workflows and prosthetic treatment concepts in the field of digital dental technologies and e-health data management using artificial intelligence and machine learning.

PD Dr. med. dent. Alexis Ioannidis

Head of Reconstructive Dentistry

Alexis Ioannidis graduated from the University of Zurich in 2009 and received his Venia Legendi in Reconstructive Dentistry in 2021. After postgraduate training at the University of Zurich and a research fellowship in Athens, he returned to Zurich in 2017 and became Head of Fixed Prosthodontics in 2023. He is a specialist in Reconstructive Dentistry and holds an MAS in Oral Implantology as well as an MAS in Periodontology (both UZH). His clinical practice focuses on treating patients using comprehensive reconstructive dentistry methods. His research interests include digital and minimally invasive prosthodontics.

PD Dr. med. dent. Nadja Nänni

Head of Postgraduate Education

Nadja Naenni holds a specialist degree in reconstructive dentistry and a Master in Oral Implantology from the University of Zurich. In 2021 she was awared the ‘Venia Legendi’ (PD) from the University of Zurich. Since 2013, she is a full-time Senior Research and Teaching Assistant at the above clinic in Zurich, Switzerland (Prof. Ronald Jung) and spent one year (2017) in Malmö and Gothenburg as a guest researcher (Prof Ann Wennerberg). She is in charge of the postgraduate program and a senior member of the interdisciplinary team for periimplantitis. Her scientific interests lie on prosthodontics, implant dentistry and regenerative procedures.

Dr. med. dent. Marc Balmer

Senior Teaching and Research Assistant 

Dr. med. dent. Marc Balmer, Senior Teaching and Research Assistant, graduated from the Center of Dental Medicine, University of Zurich, and received his Dr. med. dent. degree from the same institution. He holds a degree of postgraduate education in general dentistry (SSO), a title of Specialist in Reconstructive Dentistry (SSRD / SSO) and a Master of Oral Implantology (UZH). Marc Balmer's clinical expertise revolves around the treatment of complex and esthetic dental cases, encompassing all facets of reconstructive dentistry, including implant dentistry. He initiated the implementation of digital knowledge management at the clinic and is teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. At the clinic, he is responsible for research in Applied Technologies and Robotics in Dentistry, as well as Ceramic Implantology.

Dr. med. et med. dent. Elena Mühlemann

Senior Teaching and Research Assistant

Elena Mühlemann graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Uzhhorod, Ukraine, and received the Dr. med. degree from the Faculty of Medicine in Zurich. She later started her career in dentistry by obtaining her Dr. med. dent Degree from the Center of Dental Medicine, University of Zurich, Switzerland. She is trained in removable prosthodontics and has been full-time Senior Teaching and Research Assistant at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry at the University of Zurich,Switzerland for the last 5 years. Her focus is on the treatment of complex, partially and fully edentulous patients using all available options of removable prosthodontics including dental implants.

Dr. med. dent. Roman Schellenberg

Senior Teaching and Research Assistant

Roman Schellenberg is an experienced clinician with a strong focus on teaching complete dentures and reconstructive dentistry on teeth and implants. He is committed to inspiring undergraduate and postgraduate students in these fields. He holds a Dr. med. dent (DMD) degree,  a Master of Advanced Studies in Oral Implantology from the University of Zurich, a title of Specialist in Reconstructive Dentistry (SSRD / SSO), and has received awards for academic excellence, particularly in teaching. Notable contributions include serving as a clinical instructor and clinical assistant with a special emphasis fixed and removable prosthodontics. As a dedicated educator with a strong foundation in dental medicine he is passionate about teaching complete denture and prosthodontic techniques. After a 1.5 year long stay in Chile and Mexico, he rejoined the RZM team as Senior Teaching Assistant in March 2023. 

Dr. med. dent. Anina Zürcher

Senior Teaching and Research Assistant 

Anina Zürcher holds a specialist degree in reconstructive dentistry and a Master's in Oral Implantology from the University of Zurich. Since 2022, she has been working as a full-time Senior Research and Teaching Assistant at the clinic of reconstructive dentistry in Zurich, Switzerland, under the supervision of Prof. Ronald Jung. In 2021, she received a scholarship from the Osteology Foundation, allowing her to spend a year (2021-2022) as a guest researcher at Queen Mary University in London, collaborating with Prof. Nikos Donos. She is actively involved in the clinic and contributes to the education of both undergraduate and postgraduate students and participates in various research projects. She is a member of the interdisciplinary team focused on peri-implantitis, and her scientific interests revolve around prosthodontics, implant dentistry, and oral regeneration.

Dr. scient. med. Franz Strauss

Senior Teaching and Research Assistant

Dr. Franz Strauss graduated from the University of Finis Terrae, Chile in 2010. He completed his two-and-a-half-year residency in Periodontics at the University Valparaiso and his Master of Science in 2015 at the University of Chile. In 2017 he moved to Vienna for his PhD at the Department of Oral Biology at the Medical University of Vienna under the mentorship of Prof. Reinhard Gruber. Since September 2019 he has been serving as a Research Assistant at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry. In 2020 Dr. Strauss was appointed assistant Professor at the University of Chile and in 2023 Senior Lecturer at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry. Currently, he is completing a Master of Science in Evidence-Based Health Care Medical Statistics at the University of Oxford. His main research focus has been oral regeneration and implant dentistry, designing and conducting basic, pre-clinical and clinical research, publishing more than 60 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, while serving as a reviewer for several journals in periodontics and implant dentistry. Dr. Strauss has been recipients of several scholarships and research grants either as a principal investigator or co-investigator, including ITI, ORF, SSO, Osteology Foundation and Geistlich-Stucki Foundation.

Dr. med. dent. Stefan Bienz

Senior Teaching and Research Assistant  
(Part-time)

Stefan Bienz graduated with a Master in Dental Medicine at the Center of Dental Medicine, University of Zurich, Switzerland in 2011. After a 5-year period as full-time associate in a private office, he completed the 3-year postgraduate training with a Master in Oral Implantology from the University of Zurich and a specialization in Reconstructive Dentistry. He held a full-time Senior Research and Teaching Assistant at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry, University of Zurich, Switzerland from 2020-2023. Currently, he holds the position of a part-time Senior Research and Teaching Assistant at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry, University of Zurich, Switzerland and is working in a private office in Zollikon-Zürich. His scientific focus lies on soft and hard tissue regeneration, while the clinical work encompasses complex and esthetic cases including all aspects of hard and soft tissue regeneration, dental implants and reconstructive dentistry.

Dr. med. dent. Jenni Hjerppe, PhD

Senior Teaching and Research Assistant  
(Part-time)

Jenni Hjerppe graduated as a specialist in Reconstructive Dentistry in 2013 from University of Helsinki, Finland and 2023 from Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry, University of Zürich, Switzerland. She has received a Master of Applied Sciences in Oral Implantology degree in 2023 from University of Zürich. In 2010 she defenced her PhD Thesis about zirconia as dental biomaterial at University of Turku, Finland. Her research interests are dental robotics as well as clinical and laboratory studies on prosthetic materials, especially ceramics on teeth and implants. 
 

Dr. med. dent. Riccardo Kraus

Senior Teaching and Research Assistant

Riccardo Kraus is a Senior Teaching and Research Assistant at the Clinic of Reconstructive Dentistry, University of Zurich, Switzerland. He holds a dental degree and a "doctor medicinae dentium” from the University of Zurich. After practicing in Aarau, Switzerland, he pursued advanced training in Oral and Implant Surgery at the University of Berne, and then in Prosthodontics and Implantology at the University of Zurich. Kraus is a Specialist in Oral Surgery and in Reconstructive Dentistry, with expertise in complex dental treatments. His main scientific interests include implant dentistry, in particular sinus floor elevation, zirconia abutments and full-arch implant supported reconstructions.
